چکیده

We propose a simple model of a waveguide network designed following the growth rule of a Vicsek fractal. We show, within the framework of real space renormalization group (RSRG) method, that such a design may lead to the appearance of unusual electromagnetic modes. Such modes exhibit an extended character in RSRG sense. However, they lead to a power law decay in the end-to-end transmission of light across such a network model as the size of the network increases. This, to our mind, may lead to an observation of power law localization of light in a fractal waveguide network. The general occurence of photonic band gaps and their change as a function of the parameters of the system are also discussed. PACS: 42.25.Bs, 42.82.Et, 61.44.Br, 72.15.Rn

Investigating the Properties of an Optical Waveguide Based on Photonic Crystal with Point Defect and Lattice Constant Perturbation

In this paper, a photonic crystal waveguide with point defects and lattice constant perturbations of +5%, -5% are being investigated. Firstly waveguide structures with constant and specific parameters are being studied and photonic band gap diagrams for TE/TM modes are depicted; then pulse propagation in the frequencies available in the band gap are shown. After that, effects of parameters like...

The effect of material nonlinearity on the band gap for TE and TM modes in square and triangular lattices

In this article, by using the method of finite difference time domain (FDTD) and PML boundary conditions, we have studied the photonic band gaps for TE and TM modes in square and triangular lattices consisting of air holes in dielectric medium and compared the results. In addition, the effect of nonlinearity of the photonic crystal background on the photonic band gaps and comparison with the re...

Bound states in photonic crystal waveguides and waveguide bends

We investigate the mechanism for the appearance of bound states in two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides and contrast it with the corresponding mechanism for conventional guides. It is shown that the periodicity of the photonic crystal can give rise to frequency ranges above cutoff where no guided modes exist in the waveguides. Such mode gaps make possible the creation of bound states in ...

Interface localized modes and hybrid lattice solitons in waveguide arrays

Nonlinear Physics Center, Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, Australian National University, Canberra ACT 0200, Australia We discuss the formation of guided modes localized at the interface separating two different periodic photonic lattices. Employing the effective discrete model, we analyze linear and nonlinear interface modes and also predict the existence of stable interf...

A New Method for Calculating Propagation Modes of a One Dimensional Photonic Crystal (RESEARCH NOTE)

Photonic band-gap (PBG) crystals offer new dimensions of freedom in controlling propagation of electromagnetic waves. The existence of stop-bands in the transmission characteristic of these crystals makes them a suitable element for the realization of many useful microwave and optical subsystems. In this paper, we calculate the propagation constant of a one-dimensional (1-D) photonic crystal by...
